JAKARTA — Tsunami waves were detected in several areas of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and South Sulawesi after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck the Nagekeo area of NTT on Saturday (August 15, 2026) morning.
According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), tsunami waves were recorded in several locations at varying heights. The highest wave was detected in Maurole, NTT, reaching 0.94 meters, or nearly 1 meter.
In addition to Maurole, tsunami waves were also detected in several other areas, including Bulukumba in South Sulawesi, where a wave of 0.54 meters was recorded, and Baubau, where the wave reached 0.30 meters.
The earthquake that triggered the tsunami occurred in the Nagekeo area. BMKG subsequently issued an early tsunami warning following the strong earthquake on Saturday morning.
The detection of tsunami waves in several areas indicates that the earthquake’s impact was not limited to areas near the epicenter but also extended to other coastal regions.
Residents in areas under the tsunami warning are urged to follow instructions from authorities and immediately move away from coastal areas if an evacuation order is issued.
