New Toll Road Comes to Java, Semarang-Yogyakarta Access Set to Get Faste

JAKARTA – Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta are set to become better connected through a new toll road network. Construction of the Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road is being accelerated and will eventually provide an important link between Yogyakarta and the Semarang-Solo Toll Road network.

The project stretches 75.12 kilometers and is divided into six sections. The route runs from Sleman to Bawen, passing through several areas including Banyurejo, Borobudur, Magelang, Temanggung and Ambarawa.

The latest development involves Section 6, connecting Ambarawa and Bawen over approximately 5.2 kilometers. PT Jasa Marga is targeting the section to begin operations in November 2026 after completing the operational feasibility testing process.

Jasa Marga President Director Rivan A Purwantono said the opening of Section 6 is part of the addition of new toll road sections expected to support public mobility toward the end of 2026 and into early 2027.

Once the Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road is connected to the Semarang-Solo Toll Road network, travel between Yogyakarta and the Semarang area will become more integrated. Currently, many journeys between the two areas still rely on non-toll roads, where traffic can become congested, particularly during holidays and weekends.

The government also views the project as more than simply a way to shorten travel times. The new toll road is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, support tourism and generate economic benefits for areas along the route.

The Ministry of Public Works has said toll road development can improve travel efficiency while helping reduce logistics costs. The economic impact is also expected to extend to areas connected to the new network.

Construction of the other sections is still underway. Section 1, from Sleman to Banyurejo, spans 8.8 kilometers; Section 2, Banyurejo-Borobudur, covers 15.20 kilometers; and Section 3, Borobudur-Magelang, stretches 8.10 kilometers.

Section 4, Magelang-Temanggung, spans 16.65 kilometers, while Section 5, Temanggung-Ambarawa, covers 21.39 kilometers. Once all sections are connected, the Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road will create a new corridor strengthening connectivity between Yogyakarta and northern Central Java.

Jasa Marga has also said several other new toll road sections are projected to begin operations toward the end of 2026 or early 2027. Together, these sections are expected to add around 62 kilometers to the toll road network, including routes that have previously been used functionally.

Ultimately, the Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road is expected to offer more than faster travel. The route is also projected to become part of a broader transportation network connecting tourism destinations, economic centers and major cities across Central Java and Yogyakarta.
