JAKARTA — PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk has changed its free baggage allowance policy from the weight concept to the piece concept, effective September 1, 2026.
The policy applies to all tickets purchased or issued starting September 1, 2026, and will serve as the basis for calculating free baggage allowance on all flights operated by Garuda Indonesia.
In an announcement on its official website, Garuda Indonesia stated that under the new policy, checked baggage will be calculated based on the number of suitcases carried by passengers, rather than the total combined weight.
“Effective September 1, 2026, Garuda Indonesia will introduce greater baggage convenience through the Piece Concept policy, under which checked baggage will be calculated based on the number of baggage items,” Garuda Indonesia management wrote.
The state-owned airline explained that each ticket will indicate the number of suitcases that passengers are allowed to bring, along with the maximum weight limit for each suitcase. This will enable passengers to know their baggage allowance before departure.
“This update is designed to provide a more comfortable travel experience, help you prepare your baggage before departure, and support a faster and smoother check-in and baggage claim process,” Garuda Indonesia said.
Garuda emphasized that the change does not reduce passengers’ free baggage allowance. On the contrary, under the new scheme, the maximum weight limit for each suitcase has been increased according to the travel class.
In addition to providing greater certainty regarding the number of suitcases passengers may bring, the implementation of the piece concept is also intended to align Garuda Indonesia’s baggage policy with the standards adopted by various international airlines.
“Thus providing a more consistent travel experience, especially for those continuing their journey on international flights,” Garuda Indonesia wrote.
