Former BIN Chief Syamsir Siregar Passes Away

JAKARTA — Former Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Syamsir Siregar, passed away on Tuesday (25/8/2026).

Syamsir Siregar breathed his last in Jakarta. He was 84 years old.

Syamsir served as Chief of BIN from 2004–2009, during the presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). He succeeded A.M. Hendropriyono and was later succeeded by Sutanto.

Before leading BIN, Syamsir had a long career in the Indonesian Military (TNI). He graduated from the Military Academy in 1965 and the Army Staff and Command School (Seskoad) in 1981.

He held several strategic positions, including Chief of Staff of the 1st Infantry Division of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad), Chief of Staff of Kodam III/Siliwangi, Commander of Kodam II/Sriwijaya, and Head of the Armed Forces Intelligence Agency.

After retiring from the military, Syamsir remained active in the professional sector. He was appointed President Commissioner of PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk in 2010.

Japfa also conveyed its condolences over Syamsir’s passing. The company stated that the position of its Board of Commissioners remains compliant with applicable regulations and that changes to the composition of the board will be made at the next General Meeting of Shareholders (RUPS).

Syamsir’s body was laid to rest at a funeral home in the Bambu Apus area, Cipayung, East Jakarta, before being buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP), South Jakarta.

The funeral ceremony was conducted with military honors. It was attended by several public figures and officials, including Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago and Chairman of the National Economic Council Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
