Pelindo Marine Strengthens Leadership Skills of 73 Tugboat Captains

Surabaya – PT Pelindo Marine Service (Pelindo Marine) is strengthening the leadership competencies of tugboat captains through an In House Training (IHT) program titled Leadership Program for Captain: Navigate to Excellence.

The program was held in Surabaya, Makassar, and Belawan from July to August 2026, involving 73 tugboat captains from Regional 1, 3, and 4.

The training focused on strengthening leadership capabilities on board. The initiative is part of Pelindo Marine’s efforts to foster a safety culture while supporting the company’s operational reliability.

Training Materials Tailored to Field Requirements

As part of the program, Pelindo Marine brought in speakers from the practitioner, management, and regulatory sectors to broaden participants’ perspectives.

The training materials were developed based on operational needs previously identified through surveys conducted during earlier IHT programs. This approach was intended to ensure that leadership development for captains was targeted and relevant to various operational challenges.

During the IHT in Surabaya, Pelindo Marine invited Agustinus Maun, Head of the Tanjung Perak Main Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP).

He provided insights into the strategic role of captains in establishing a safety culture on board.

“The captain, as a leader, determines the direction. The captain’s attitude determines the safety of lives, assets, and cargo. It is not merely about words and theory, but must be implemented in accordance with applicable regulations because it is an important part of ensuring shipping safety,” Agustinus Maun said.

Consistently Held for Three Years

Pelindo Marine Director of Finance, Human Resources, and Risk Management Lia Indi Agustiana said the IHT program for seafarers has been conducted consistently for three years and has received positive responses from participants.

“This program provides an opportunity for captains to develop their leadership skills, while also being part of Pelindo Marine’s commitment to building competent, professional, and safety-oriented maritime human resources,” Lia said.

According to her, strengthening captains’ leadership capabilities is not limited to their ability to carry out duties on board, but is also part of the company’s efforts to develop professional maritime human resources who prioritize safety.

Building Communication and Teamwork Skills

Captain of KT. Hang Tuah IV Abdul Rahman Ali said several training materials provided valuable skills for captains in carrying out their roles as leaders on board.

Among the materials he found useful were techniques for delivering constructive feedback, as well as coaching and empowering teams.

According to Abdul Rahman, the materials helped him develop more effective communication while improving crew performance.

“The materials are very useful in helping me build better communication with the crew and create stronger teamwork to support the vessel’s operations,” he said.

Pelindo Marine reaffirmed its commitment to continuously improving the competence and professionalism of its seafarers, particularly captains as the primary leaders on board, through sustainable IHT programs.
