BPS Reveals a Surprising Fact: Domestic Air Passengers Declined by 6.12%
Jakarta – Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the number of domestic air passengers reached approximately 5.28 million in June 2026, down 6.12% compared to May 2026. The decline followed the long holiday period in the previous month, which had driven higher public mobility.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, explained that the decline in domestic passenger numbers was part of the normalization of transportation activities following the high travel demand during the holiday season. Despite the monthly decrease, national air travel mobility remained at a relatively high level.
In contrast to domestic flights, the number of international air passengers increased. This trend reflects continued strong demand for cross-border travel amid the recovery of international tourism and business travel.
BPS also recorded continued growth in the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in June 2026. The increase in international visitors became one of the key factors supporting passenger traffic on international routes, even as domestic air travel slowed.
Meanwhile, other modes of transportation showed mixed performance. Passenger movements on sea transportation and railways continued to reflect strong public mobility, although travel patterns shifted following the end of the holiday season.
The BPS data indicate that Indonesia’s transportation sector remains dynamic. The decline in domestic air passengers in June was more reflective of seasonal factors than weakening demand, while the increase in international travel suggests that Indonesia’s connectivity with global markets continues to recover.
