From Engineering to Leading a Refinery, Edy Januari Appointed President Director of Pertamina Balikpapan Refinery
JAKARTA — Edy Januari Utama has been appointed President Director of PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (KPB).
He is not a new figure in Pertamina’s oil processing and refining business. He has extensive experience within PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI).
Before taking up his new position at KPB, Edy served as General Manager of PT KPI’s Refinery Unit IV Cilacap. ANTARA reported that Edy led the Cilacap Refinery in several strategic activities, including its first export of Marine Fuel Oil Low Sulphur (MFOLS) to Singapore in May 2024. During the activity, Edy led the first lifting of the product from the Cilacap Refinery.
A 1991 graduate of Chemical Engineering at Diponegoro University, Edy was also involved in the development of energy transition initiatives at the Cilacap Refinery. He was part of the management team that inaugurated a 0.99 MWp solar power plant (PLTS) at the refinery. The solar power plant was developed through a collaboration between PT KPI and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy.
Edy’s experience within Pertamina’s refining business dates back well before his tenure at the Cilacap Refinery. In 2021, he served as General Manager of PT KPI’s Refinery Unit III Plaju. At the time, Edy ensured that the Plaju Refinery’s operations continued to run optimally and supported fuel and LPG supplies during the Christmas and New Year period.
He was also previously involved in the development of the Balikpapan refinery project. A 2016 report on the Balikpapan RDMP project identified Edy Januari as Manager of Engineering & Development at RU V during the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage of the project.
Edy will now return to the Balikpapan Refinery with extensive experience in the oil processing and refining sector.
His professional track record spans various functions within the refining business, from engineering and project development to leading refinery operations in Plaju and Cilacap.
His experience is also reflected in several projects he has overseen. During his tenure as General Manager of the Cilacap Refinery, for example, Edy was involved in the development of low-sulfur fuel products for export markets. In May 2024, the Cilacap Refinery carried out its first export of MFOLS to Singapore, involving 200 metric barrels.
KPB plays a strategic role in Indonesia’s energy security agenda. The company is part of the Balikpapan Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP), one of the National Strategic Projects aimed at increasing oil processing capacity and quality while reducing dependence on imported fuel.
In January 2026, the Balikpapan RDMP project was inaugurated and was reported to be capable of increasing the production of gasoline with an octane rating above RON 90 to approximately 5.8 million kiloliters per year. The project is also aimed at producing higher-quality fuel, including fuel meeting Euro 5 standards.
However, as of the publication of this report, PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan has yet to issue an official statement regarding Edy Januari Utama’s appointment.
