Banda Aceh Municipal Official Detained Over Alleged Same-Sex Relationship

BANDA ACEH — A municipal official in the Banda Aceh City Government has been detained by the Sharia Police after being apprehended with a non-civil servant. The two were reportedly detained two days before Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal disclosed the case.

Illiza confirmed the detention but said the examination was still ongoing, preventing her from providing further details about the case.

“That is true, but I also do not know the details yet because everything is still being processed. Further information can be confirmed with the Head of the Civil Service Police Unit,” Illiza told reporters on Friday (August 14, 2026).

According to Illiza, the official works at the Inspectorate of the Banda Aceh City Government. The official was reportedly detained together with a non-civil servant at a government office.

The two are currently undergoing questioning by the Sharia Police. The Banda Aceh City Government is waiting for the results of the examination before determining its next steps.

Illiza stressed that the government would take legal action against anyone found to have violated the law in accordance with the applicable regulations.

“The point is that, in terms of law enforcement, we do not discriminate. We will proceed based on the results of the examination and in accordance with the applicable law,” Illiza said.

As of now, the case remains under investigation. The Banda Aceh City Government has not provided further information regarding the alleged violation or the results of the examination of the official.

The identities of the official and the non-civil servant who were detained have also not been disclosed by Illiza.
